To meet the evolving operational needs of the force, the Indian Army is set to implement a comprehensive promotion policy from January 1, 2024. The new promotion policy will be applicable for ranks of Colonel, Brigadier, Major General and Lt-General, ANI reported quoting senior officials.
"As part of this, a comprehensive review of the promotion policy for selection of officers to select ranks of Colonels and above has been finalised," Indian Army officials said.

The new policy has been strategically crafted to align leadership requirements with current and emerging operational challenges, both internally and externally. The policy incorporates increased promotional opportunities, especially those at the Major General rank. Moreover, officers serving in the 'staff' division will be eligible for promotion within the same division.
"While the current promotion policy has been effective over time, policies must adapt to evolving operational needs," a senior Army official told Times of India.
He further emphasised, "This new policy is designed to synchronise leadership needs with the current and emerging operational challenges, encompassing both internal and external dimensions."
In addition to addressing the aspirations of officers, the new policy will provide equitable satisfaction in promotion boards and also strengthen meritocracy.
The Indian Army's current Human Resources management framework is characterised by a variety of policies and provisions that lack consistent application across various selection boards. The new policy aims to rectify this by ensuring uniformity in policy application across all selection boards, thus simplifying and standardising the promotion process.
The new policy comes months after the Army adopted a common uniform for Brigadiers, Major Generals, Lt-Generals, irrespective of their parent cadre and appointments.
