India Working With US On Early Extradition Of 26/11 Accused Tahawwur Rana, Says MEA

India is seeking the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, as he is wanted in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks case.

India is working with the United States on the procedural issues for Mumbai attack accused Tahawwur Rana's early extradition to India, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.

The development comes days after the US Supreme Court cleared Tahawwur Rana's extradition to India, dismissing a review petition against the move.

"The US Supreme Court on 21 January 2025 declined to hear a petition from the accused. We are now working with the US side on procedural issues for early extradition to India of the accused in the Mumbai terror attack. We will keep you updated," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

India is seeking the extradition of Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, as he is wanted in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks case.

Rana had filed a "petition for a writ of certiorari" before the US Supreme Court in November 2024. However, the US court denied his plea on January 21, a day after Donald Trump was sworn in as the US President.

The Mumbai attack accused then filed a review petition against the move, which was dismissed by the top court. 64-year-old Rana is currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.
