Waterlogging, Traffic Congestion Bring Parts Of India To Halt, IMD Issues Rain Alert In Several States. Top Points

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued ‘red’ and ‘orange’ alerts in different states as heavy rains lashed various parts of the country on Thursday. Delhi reported waterlogging and traffic snarls after heavy rain in several parts of the national capital.
While Delhi reported waterlogging in nine locations, including Jai Vihar in Baprola, Azad Market, Sadh Nagar in Palam, Shahpur Jat, Nimri Colony in Ashok Vihar, the downpour in Maharashtra increased on Thursday as some areas received 40mm to 70mm rain in the last 12 hours.

- Traffic congestion was reported in Delhi’s Pragati Maidan, Modi Mills flyover, both carriageways of MB Road, and Rani Jhasi Road. According to IMD, Delhi received 5 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours.
- Maharashtra witnessed moderate to heavy rains on Thursday. IMD issued an ‘orange’ alert for Mumbai and said more downpour is likely in the city.
- The intensity of rain increased after midnight on Thursday and some areas including Dadar, Mahim, Khar, Matunga and Kurla recorded rain in the range of 40 mm to 70 mm in the last 12 hours, as per data of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
- According to reports, bus routes were diverted at Sion due to waterlogging around 4.45 am. The routes were restored at around 8am.
- In Goa, a 56-year-old woman identified as Florina D'Souza, was swept away in flood waters and several houses in low-lying areas were inundated as it witnessed heavy to very heavy rains in the last 24 hours. She was on her way to a paddy field with another woman in Naqueri Betul village of South Goa. Disaster management agencies, after extensive search, found her body in an abandoned bauxite mining pit near the paddy field.
- The IMD issued a 'red' alert for Goa, and predicted heavy rains in parts of both North Goa and South Goa districts.
- The weather office also predicted inundation of houses in low-lying areas, localised and short-term disruption of essential services, and low visibility during intense spells of rain.
- In Kerala, the weather office issued a ‘red’ alert in two districts Kannur and Kasaragod after rains intensified in the state on Thursday. ‘Orange’ alert was issued in seven other districts.
- Heavy rain threw life out of gear, as schools declared holiday and several people had to shifted to relief camps after their houses were damaged.
- The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) issued warnings and cautioned people against tourism and trekking in hilly areas or venturing out into the water bodies and rivers.
