India's Omicron Tally Nears 1500-Mark, Maharashtra Tops List With 454 Cases. Check State-Wise Update

The Omicron tally in Maharashtra is the highest in the country with 454 cases of the highly transmissible variant.

New Delhi: The Omicron cases in the country continue to surge rapidly as the total tally nears 1500 mark. India has also reported a huge spike in Coronavirus cases in the last few day and the country clocked 22,775 new cases, 8,949 recoveries in the last 24 hours.

406 people succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours and the increase in the death toll has become a huge concern for the country. India's Omicron tally now stands at 1431. The active caseload currently stands at 1,04,781. The recovery rate is currently at 98.32%.

Maharashtra

As much as 55 per cent out of 282 samples of coronavirus patients from Mumbai, sent for genome sequencing, have tested positive for the Omicron variant, the civic body said on Friday.

This was the seventh batch of samples sent to a lab at the Kasturba Hospital of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the National Institute of Virology, Pune, a BMC release said.

Out of 282 samples, 156 (55 per cent) were found to be of Omicron variant, 89 (32 per cent) of Delta Derivative and 37 (13 per cent) of Delta variant.

Only one of these patients, a senior citizen infected with the Delta Derivative, died, the BMC said.

He also suffered from diabetes and hypertension and had taken only the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, it added.

Further, only 17 of these 282 patients needed hospitalization. Nine of the hospitalized patients had Omicron infection.

"None of these Omicron patients showed any symptoms. In addition, they did not need oxygen supply or admission to ICU," the release said.

Gujarat

 Gujarat has reported 16 new cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 on Friday, taking the tally of the highly transmissible variant in the state to 113,

Ten Omicron-infected patients also recovered during the day, it said.

Of 16 new cases, six were reported from Ahmedabad, three each from Surat city and Anand, and one each from Junagadh, Amreli, Bharuch, and Banaskantha.

Of total 113 persons found infected with the new variant, 54 have recovered, including 10 on Friday, while 59 are still under treatment.

No Omicron patient has died in Gujarat so far.

At 39, Ahmedabad city accounts for the highest number of Omicron cases, followed by 21 in Vadodara city, 12 in Surat city, 11 in Anand and six in Kheda.
