HMPV In India: India reported a fresh case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) as a child tested positive in Puducherry. The girl child complained of fever, cough and running nose and was admitted to a hospital a few days ago.

This is the second case of HMPV reported in Puducherry as a three-year-old child tested positive last week. Director of Health for Puducherry V Ravichandran said the child was recovering well and all precautionary measures had been taken.

With this, India now has a total of 17 cases of HMPV. Gujarat has the maximum of five cases, followed by Maharashtra and Kolkata at three, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry at two, and Assam at one.

The Centre has asked all states to step up surveillance for Severe Acute Respiratory Illnesses (SARI) and Influenza Like Illness (ILI) to identify any surge in respiratory illnesses in the wake of the spread of the largely benign Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China. The Indian Council of Medical Research has said that HMPV is already in circulation globally.

The virus spreads through direct contact with infected people or contaminated surfaces. It mimics common cold and influenza symptoms. HMPV causes mild respiratory symptoms, such as cough, fever, and blocked nose. According to the WHO, while anyone can catch hMPV, “infants, older adults, and those with health conditions like immunosuppression, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are at higher risk for severe illness”.
