India, Pakistan Exchange List Of Nuclear Installations Under 1988 Agreement

The list was exchanged in accordance with the requirements of an agreement prohibiting attacks on nuclear infrastructure and facilities, according to MEA.

India and Pakistan on Monday exchanged the list of nuclear installations. The list was exchanged in accordance with the requirements of an agreement prohibiting attacks on nuclear infrastructure and facilities, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). It was carried out concurrently through diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad.

"India and Pakistan today exchanged, through diplomatic channels simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad, the list of nuclear installations and facilities, covered under the agreement on the prohibition of attack against nuclear installations and facilities between India and Pakistan," the MEA said.

The agreement was signed on December 31, 1988, and went into effect on January 27, 1991. It requires the two nations to notify each other of nuclear sites and facilities covered by the agreement on January 1st of each calendar year.

The list was exchanged amid strained relations between the two nations over the Kashmir problem and cross-border terrorism. 

"This is the 33rd consecutive exchange of such lists between the two countries, the first one having taken place on January 1, 1992," the MEA said in a statement.

India, Pakistan Exchange List Of Prisoners

India and Pakistan exchanged a list of prisoners lodged in their respective jails on the new year. The Pakistani government handed over a list of 231 Indian detainees in Pakistan (47 civilians and 184 fishermen) to a representative of India's High Commission in Islamabad.

The list of Pakistani inmates in Indian jails was provided by the Indian government with an officer from the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. According to the list, there are 418 Pakistanis in Indian prisons (337 civilians and 81 fishermen).

"India and Pakistan today exchanged, through diplomatic channels simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad, the lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in their custody. Under the provisions of the 2008 Agreement on Consular Access, such lists are exchanged every year on 1st January and 1st July," MEA stated in an issued statement. 

"India has shared lists of 337 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen in its custody, who are Pakistani or are believed to be Pakistani. Similarly, Pakistan has shared lists of 47 civilian prisoners and 184 fishermen in its custody, who are Indian or are believed to be Indian," the statement further reads. 

The simultaneous exchange of lists occurred in accordance with the 2008 Consular Access Agreement. The agreement requires both nations to exchange lists of inmates in each other's custody on January 1st and July 1st of each year.

Pakistan Says ‘No Bilateral Deportation Treaty’ Exists With India Over Hafiz Saeed Extradition

Earlier in December 2023, Mumtaz Zahra, a spokesperson for Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the country has received India's request to extradite Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) head and suspected 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed. According to Zahra, there is no bilateral extradition pact between India and Pakistan for the extradition of a United Nations (UN)-designated terrorist. 

 

In a statement, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said, "Pakistan has received a request from the Indian authorities, seeking extradition of Hafiz Saeed in a so-called money laundering case."

"It is pertinent to note that no bilateral extradition treaty exists between Pakistan and India," she added.
