What Is India's Operation Brahma?

India has launched 'Operation Brahma' to provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake. India has sent 15 tonnes of relief material.

India is stepping up to provide critical humanitarian assistance to Myanmar following a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the region on Friday, March 28. The powerful earthquake left a trail of destruction, claiming at least 694 lives and injuring more than 1,700.

'Operation Brahma' Executed

In response to this crisis, India has launched 'Operation Brahma', dispatching approximately 15 tonnes of essential relief materials to the affected areas. The Indian Air Force's C130J aircraft took off from Hindon Air Force Station, loaded with vital supplies to help in the relief operations for those impacted by the disaster. The flight has reached Yangon.

The relief package includes tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, solar lamps, generator sets, and essential medicines — items that will provide immediate support to those in dire need.

"Operation Brahma - India acts as a First Responder to assist the people of Myanmar affected by yesterday's massive earthquake," Randhir Jaiswal, Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, said in an X post.

Chaotic Scenes During Earthquake

The earthquake's epicentre was located near Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, causing extensive damage across various regions. Reports indicate that buildings, bridges, and even a monastery were destroyed in the quake's wake.

Witness accounts described harrowing scenes of chaos as residents fled swaying structures and dust clouds engulfed urban areas. In Thailand, the tremors also led to significant damage, including the collapse of a high-rise building under construction in Bangkok.

PM Modi Expresses Solidarity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India's solidarity with Myanmar and Thailand during this challenging time. He conveyed his prayers for the safety and well-being of all affected individuals and emphasized India's readiness to assist. "India stands ready to offer all possible assistance," he said in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, urging authorities to remain on standby and maintain close communication with their counterparts in both countries.

'Operation Brahma' After 'Operation Sadbhav' And Operation Dost

Last year, during the floods and typhoon in Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar, India sent aid through 'Operation Sadbhav'. This year, India has christened its relief initiative 'Operation Brahma'.

This initiative is part of India's broader commitment to humanitarian aid in times of crisis. India previously extended support during disasters in Turkey and Syria through 'Operation Dost', reinforcing its role as a reliable partner in global humanitarian efforts.
