Covid: These Indian States Are Witnessing Sudden Spike In Coronavirus Cases

States in southern India have been witnessing a surge in Covid cases more than other parts of the country.

Indian recorded over 1,000 Covid-19 cases for the second time this week even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level meeting on Wednesday to review the coronavirus situation. The country registered 1,134 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, with active cases mounting to 7,026, as per Union Health Ministry data.

The country reported five deaths, one each from Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujaratm Kerala and Maharashtra. 

Currently, the daily positivity rate stands at 1.09 per cent and the weekly positivity rate at 0.98 per cent. States in southern India have been witnessing a surge in Covid cases more than other parts of the country.

Covid-19 Cases In Kerala

According to latest figures, Kerala has the highest number of active cases at 1,921. The state also saw a fresh addition of 53 cases in the last 24 hours. The Kerala government has made wearing of masks mandatory in all public places, workplaces and public gatherings.

The government has also directed shops, theatres and organisers of various events to arrange sanitation facilities.

Any international traveller coming to Kerala must undertake RT-PCR tests. Kerala is already doing random testing at airports for any arrivals and home quarantine is advisable for international travellers.

Maharashtra Sees Jump In Cases

The state with the second highest number of active cases is Maharashtra. Currently, it has 1,489 active cases. Maharashtra has seen one Covid-19 related death and an addition of 125 new cases, as per the Health Ministry website.

The government has asked people to reduce going to crowded places, wear masks, wash hands and maintain distance.

Gujarat Covid Situation

Active cases in Gujarat have surged to 916 following after the state recorded 106 new infections since Tuesday. The state has also reported one death. All passengers travelling to the state of Gujarat need to produce a negative RT-PCR report, which should not be older than 72 hours. 

There is also a fine for not wearing masks in public places.

Karnataka Sees Covid-19 Surge

Karnataka has a total number of 624 active cases. According to the Health Ministry's latest figures, the state has also discharged 105 people from the hospital.

All passengers from China, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Republic of Korea, Thailand and Japan are mandated to produce RT-PCR test results. The state is also doing random tests at airports.

Coronavirus Situation In Tamil Nadu

Another southern state seeing a rise in coronavirus infections is of Tamil Nadu, which has 441 active cases at present. The state registered 39 new cases on Wednesday. All passengers travelling to Tamil Nadu must have an RT-PCR report and must undergo home quarantine for 14 days.

Telangana Covid Infections

Telangana has the fifth highest number active cases at 190, as per the Health Ministry website. All passengers arriving in Telangana must produce RT-PCR reports from ICMR-accredited labs. 

Sudden Surge In COVID-19 Cases In New Delhi

Delhi has been witnessing a spike in cases over the last two weeks. At present, Delhi has over 270 coronavirus cases, with 61 new cases added on Wednesday. 

All passengers arriving from high-risk countries will have to undergo a compulsory RT-PCR test. People have also been advised to go for home quarantine and wear masks in public places.

What Has Centre Said?

Last week, the Centre directed six states -- Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka to follow a risk assessment-based approach to prevent and contain the spread of COVID-19 infections.

In a letter to these states, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said, "There are a few states which are reporting higher numbers of cases indicating the possible localised spread of infection." 

The Health Ministry asked the states to strictly follow a five-fold strategy of test, track, treat and vaccination.
