India Condemns 'Provocative Activities' By Pro-Khalistan Supporters During Jaishankar's London Visit

A group of pro-Khalistan supporters staged a protest outside the Chatham House think tank in London where Jaishankar had participated in a discussion on Wednesday during his UK visit.

India on Thursday condemned the incident of security breach during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's UK visit on Wednesday. The External Affairs ministry also sought action from the host country against the "misuse of democratic freedoms" by such "separatists and extremists".

A group of pro-Khalistan supporters staged a protest outside the Chatham House think tank in London where Jaishankar had participated in a discussion on Wednesday during his UK visit. However, this protest escalated into a security breach as a man ran towards Jaishankar's car while he was leaving the venue.

"We have seen the footage of a breach of security during the visit of EAM to the UK. We condemn the provocative activities of this small group of separatists and extremists. We deplore the misuse of democratic freedoms by such elements. We expect the host government in such cases to fully live upto their diplomatic obligations," EAM said in its statement.

A purported video from the security breach, which has surfaced on social media, even showed the protestor tearing the Indian national flag in front of police officers. He rushed towards the minister's convoy while he was making an exit after the discussion. He was later moved away by the police officers present on the spot.

Another video surfaced from outside the venue wherein pro-Khalistan protestors could be seen waving flags and chanting slogans during Jaishankar's UK visit.

Jaishankar on Wednesday attended a session titled 'India’s rise and role in the world' at the Chatham House in London, where he spoke about the Kashmir conflict, India-China relations, and the UK-India Free Trade Agreement. He also spoke about how US under the leadership of Donald Trump is "moving towards multipolarity which suits India's interests".

"We see a president and an administration which, in our parlance, is moving towards multipolarity and that is something that suits India," he said.

"From President Trump's perspective, the one big shared enterprise that we have is the Quad, which is an understanding where everybody pays their fair share… There are no free riders involved. So that's a good model which works," he added.
