Heavy Rains Lash Mumbai, Waterlogging Causes Severe Traffic Jam

Mumbai: Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and inundated several areas across the city including Sion, Matunga, Mahim, Andheri, Malad and Dahisar. In the city, rainfall caused huge traffic snarls at major junctions on Wednesday. Visuals after the relentless rain in Mumbai shows submersion of railway tracks in Sion. Moreover, poor visibility led to the collision of three cars in Andheri area of the city in the wee hours of Wednesday, leaving eight injured. This comes a day after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rainfall warning for Mumbai stating that a cyclonic circulation would bring more rain showers to the city in the next two days. Nearly 171 mm rainfall was recorded at the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) observatory at Colaba in south Mumbai between 8.30 am on Tuesday and 5.30 am on Wednesday According to Skymet, in the last three hours between 2:30 am and 5:30 am on Wednesday, Santa Cruz observatory recorded 51 mm of rain, with torrential downpour continuing through the morning in most parts of the city. Schedules of flights arriving at and departing from Mumbai Airport were also hampered as visibility dropped to 300 metres.
