Haryana: Low Intensity Earthquake Of Magnitude 2.8 Hits Rohtak, Ninth In Last 2 Months

Over the past two months, Delhi and NCR have recorded at least 18 earth quakes. Of these, 8 have taken place in Rohtak itself.

New Delhi: A low intensity earthquake on magnitude 2.8 hit Rohtak in Haryana on Friday afternoon. According to the initial statements by National Center for Seismology, the tremors were felt at about at 3:32 PM. Over the past two months, Delhi and NCR have recorded at least 18 earthquakes. Of these, 8 have taken place in Rohtak itself. Another low intensity earthquake had hit the area two days back on June 24 with the same magnitude of 2.8. Prior to this, two earthquakes were recorded in on May 29. Since April 12, Northern states of India India including Delhi, Haryana, Punjana, Jammu & Kashmir have recorded several earthquakes. Geologists have warned that this could indicate that a powerful earthquake could strike Delhi-NCR at any time. Delhi falls under high-risk seismic zones and is in zone IV which is susceptible to earthquakes of 5-6 magnitude and occasionally of 7-8 magnitude. Delhi’s proximity to the Himalayan region also makes it very vulnerable. This region has seen earthquakes more than magnitude 7. Neighbouring Haryana often comes on the same radar, affecting many of its areas. Rohtak, which is nearly 60 KM away from Delhi, has witnessed eight tremors in the part. The most recent was reported on June 24. Earlier this month, an earthquake of magnitude 2.1 occurred at on June 8, at about 13:00:38 IST at the depth of 18 km in Haryana. The epicentre was said to be 13 km West-northwest, of Gurugram.
