Guwahati Municipal Corporation Polls: Counting Of Votes Underway, Early Results Show BJP Leading In 43 Wards

The electoral fate of 197 candidates will be known on April 24 when votes will be counted.

New Delhi: Counting for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation election is underway and according to early results, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 18 wards uncontested. Out of 57 wards,  BJP wins 43 wards while its ally AGP wins 5 wards. AAP and AJP have won 1 ward each so far says Kamrup (Metro) District administration. He added that Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) won1 ward (Ward No 1). The counting for the elections started at 8 AM today.

The electoral fate of 197 candidates will be known on April 24 when votes will be counted.

Voting took place on Friday and a report by ANI says the GMC elections saw 52.80 percent voter turnout. Around 197 candidates are contesting the election. Congress had contested the most wards at 54, followed by BJP at 50, AAP at 39 and AJP at 25. BJP’s ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) contested 7 wards according to seat-sharing arrangements by the BJP.

“No untoward incidents like booth capturing or similar poll-related violence took place and the election completed peacefully,” the ASEC said in a statement. Out of the total 60 wards of the GMC, candidates in three were elected unopposed.

The municipal election is also the first in which EVM machines were used. A total of 757 polling stations were set up and the report by ANI says that around 80 were being conducted exclusively by women.
