Indian cities have been poorly ranked in the Global Livability Index released recently by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The information and technology hub Bengaluru has emerged as the least livable city in the country with a global rank of 146.  The national capital has been ranked 112th while the financial capital Mumbai has been placed at 117th position.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on June 24 released its Global Livability Index 2022, which ranks cities across the world on their ‘livability’ quotient, based on a range of criteria.

Ranking of Indian states

The survey included cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad and were ranked between 140 and 146. The ideal score is 100. New Delhi remained at the top of the ranking chart among Indian cities at 140 with a livability score of 56.5. Mumbai was placed second at 141 (score 56.2), Chennai at 142 (score 55.8), Ahmedabad at 143 (score 55.7) and Bengaluru at 146 (score 54.4).

Before 2022, only Delhi and Mumbai featured in the list of 173 cities. Chennai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad are new additions in the index.

According to EIU, the ideal score is 100 and the ranking is based on several parameters such as stability and culture and environment with the highest weightage of 25 per cent each, while healthcare and infrastructure carry a weightage of 20 per cent and education 10 per cent.

It is interesting to note that in May 2022, Bengaluru was ranked the most liveable among 111 cities in the government's 'Ease of Living Index'. It was followed by Pune, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Surat. Among the 49 cities ranked in the 'million-plus population' category, Delhi was placed at 13th and Srinagar at the bottom.
