Manmohan Singh, One Of India's Longest-Serving PMs, Passes Away At 92

The former PM was admitted to AIIMS Delhi on Thursday evening after his health deteriorated. He was admitted to the emergency department as his condition remained critical.

Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92 at the AIIMS Hospital in New Delhi on Thursday, December 26. The former PM was admitted to AIIMS on Thursday evening after his health deteriorated. He was admitted to the emergency department as his condition remained critical.

"With profound grief, we inform the demise of the Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had a sudden loss of consciousness at home..." AIIMS said in a statement.

It added: "Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency at AIMS, New Delhi at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM."

One of the longest-serving prime ministers of India, Singh was considered the architect of economic reforms as the PM from 2004-2014 and as finance minister before then.

The Indian National Congress offered condolences on the passing away of its veteran party leader.

"The demise of renowned economist and former Prime Minister of the country, respected Manmohan Singh ji is an irreparable loss to Indian politics. May God give peace to the departed soul and strength to his family to bear this sorrow. The Delhi Congress family pays homage to the memories of respected Manmohan ji and expresses gratitude for his contribution to nation building," INC Delhi stated in a post on X. 

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's husband Robert Vadra was among the first to announce the news on social media.

"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh ji. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Thank you for your service to our Nation. You will always be remembered for your Economic revolution and the progressive changes, you brought to the country," he stated in a post on X.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi reached Delhi AIIMS where former PM Dr Manmohan Singh was admitted earlier today.

Singh was known as the brainchild of economic reforms in 1991. As finance minister under the then PM PV Narasimha Rao, he liberalised the economy that saved India from bankruptcy and is believed to have changed India's economic trajectory.
