Magnitude 7.2 Earthquake Hits China, Tremors Felt Across Delhi-NCR

The Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) experienced strong tremors following an earthquake in northern India on Monday night, news agency ANI reported. Further details are awaited.

The National Centre for Seismology reported a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hitting Southern Xinjiang, China, at 11:39 pm.

This occurrence comes merely a week after seismic activity was felt in Delhi and its neighboring areas. The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported a 6.0 magnitude earthquake striking Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region at 2:20 pm last Thursday. The quake's epicenter was recorded at a depth of 213 kilometers.

According to Geo News, the tremors were felt across various parts of Pakistan, including the provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as major cities like Peshawar, Lahore, and the capital, Islamabad.

The beginning of the year saw seismic events, coupled with a tsunami in Japan. Japan experienced initial tsunami waves following a substantial 7.6 magnitude earthquake, as reported by AFP, citing the meteorological agency. A tsunami warning had been issued after the earthquake hit central Japan on New Year's Day, with waves of up to 5 meters anticipated, NHK reported.

Tremors were felt in Tokyo and the broader Kanto area. Japanese officials urged residents to swiftly move to higher ground, anticipating waves as high as 3 meters, according to Japantimes. No abnormalities in nuclear plants were reported by the Japanese government after the earthquake, as per AFP.

Tsunami warnings were issued along the Sea of Japan coast, spanning from Hokkaido to Nagasaki, with waves predicted to reach 3 meters. Multiple aftershocks followed the initial quake, registering a magnitude of 7.4, primarily impacting the Noto Peninsula. By 4:35 pm, waves of 80 cm reached Toyama Prefecture, and waves of 40 meters were reported in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture. The warning also indicated potential tsunami impact on Yamagata and Hyogo prefectures.
