Congress President Election | Digvijay Singh To Contest For Party's Top Post, Set To Meet Sonia Gandhi Today: Report

The filing of nomination will begin on September 24 and will end on September 30. The counting of votes will take place on October 19.

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh is likely to contest election for the position of party’s national president. He is expected to reach Delhi today and meet Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi, reported news agency ANI.

The election for the party's top post is slated to be held on October 17. The filing of nomination will begin on September 24 and will end on September 30. The counting of votes will take place on October 19. Rahul Gandhi is unlikely to contest elections for the party's national president, as reported by ANI. He will not come to Delhi leaving the party's Bharat Jodo Yatra in between during the party's presidential election, Congress sources told the news agency.

The yatra which started on September 7, is in Kerala at present and will enter Karnataka on September 29. Earlier on Wednesday, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot met Sonia Gandhi amid the buzz about a contest in the party with regard to presidential elections. Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has also expressed his desire to run for the presidential elections.

Tharoor, who is also a member of G23, met Congress's Central Election Authority chairman Madhusudan Mistry on Wednesday. Mistry later said that all of Tharoor's queries related to the election were answered. "We answered all his (Shashi Tharoor's) queries regarding Congress presidential election. We explained to him about the electoral rules, number of agents and their roles, and discussed how to fill out the form for election," Mistry told ANI.

Mistry had earlier said that those who want to contest for the post of president will need signatures of at least 10 delegates and that no separate polling booths will be made for party leaders on Bharat Jodo Yatra including Rahul Gandhi.
