Delhi New Speed Limit: Centre Revises Norms For Vehicles, Violation To Result In Heavy Fines; Check Details

Besides cars and two-wheelers, the central government has also capped the maximum speed limit for buses, tempo, and three-wheelers. Know all about it.

New Delhi: The central government has fixed the speed limit of vehicles in Delhi and violating the same can lead to people incurring heavy fines.  

For cars, the maximum limit is set at 60-70km/hr on most roads in Delhi whereas the maximum speed limit for two-wheelers has been fixed at 50-60 km/hr.

"We've revised speed limit under 4 classifications. For M1 category vehicles, the max speed limit is 60-70 km/hr. We've made cabs/taxis speed limit at par with cars after this notification": Meenu Choudhary, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), informed.

On all roads inside residential and commercial markets, the maximum speed limit for cars and bikes will be 30 km/hr.

The central government has also capped the maximum speed limit for buses, tempo, and three-wheelers at 40 km/hr.

Delhi Traffic Police issued the official notification regarding the speed limit.

"Where the speed limit for cars is at 50 km/hr, the speed limit for two-wheelers will be at 50 km/hr but where the cars speed limit is 70km/hr, for two-wheelers it is 60km/hr," Joint CP Traffic, Meenu Choudhary stated.

For M2 and M3 category vehicles, the speed limit is fixed at 50-60 km/hr. The speed limit for all transport vehicles, including Gramin Sewa, TSRs, Phat-Phat Sewa, and quadricycles remains at 40 km/hr, she added.

M1 category vehicles are motor vehicles used for the carriage of passengers comprising not more than 8 seats in addition to the driver's seat. 

M2 and M3 category vehicles are motor vehicles (LMV up to 7.5 tonnes) used for the carriage of passengers comprising 9 or more seats in addition to the driver's seat.

N category includes vehicles motor vehicles used for the carriage of goods.

This notification supersedes all previous orders/notifications issued by Delhi traffic police regarding declarations of speed limits on the roads. These new speeding limits are to be followed with immediate effect, the order stated.
