Delhi HC Orders CBI Probe In Death Of Man Allegedly Forced To Sing National Anthem During 2020 Riots
A bench of Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani delivered the verdict on the petition filed by deceased man's mother.
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday ordered a CBI investigation into the death of a 23-year-old man who was allegedly forced to sing the national anthem during the 2020 Delhi Riots.
A petition was filed in the Delhi High Court seeking a probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the death of Faizan who was allegedly forced to sing the national anthem during the riots of 2020.
A bench of Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani delivered the verdict on the petition filed by the deceased man's mother.
In a purported video clip, the 23-year-old, along with four other Muslim men, was seen being allegedly beaten up by policemen while being forced to sing the national anthem and say “Vande Mataram”.
The particular video had gone viral during the riots showing Faizan being beaten up by Delhi Police officials who were allegedly seen forcing him to sing the National Anthem.
Faizan's mother in her petition in the Delhi High Court, alleged that police assaulted and illegally detained her son and denied him critical healthcare due to which he succumbed to the injuries. Faizan's mother Kismatun contended in the High Court that her son was beaten up in police custody also.

The plea seeking a probe was filed in 2020, after the Delhi riots that broke out in February following widespread protests against the Citizenship Amendments Act (CAA).
CAA provides for a way to grant citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Under the provisions of the CAA, Indian citizenship will be granted to six minority communities - Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Parsis - who arrived in India before December 31, 2014, from these three neighboring countries.
