Delhi Govt Issues Advisory To Tackle Locust Attack; Suggests Using Pesticides, Awareness Programs

The migrating pests are reportedly present in the neighbouring states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, may head to the national capital soon.

New Delhi: With swarms of locusts crossing the borders of Rajasthan and Gujarat to invade other northern states, Delhi Government on Thursday issued an advisory on preventive measures to tackle probable locust attack in the national capital. The migrating pests, which have entered India earlier than their usual period, have changed their strategy of flying in low lying areas and seem to be flying at a great height. In order to save crops from their attack and relieve stressed farmers, states have taken various measures. Delhi government has also issued a notice in this regard. In an official release, the authorities said that in order to prevent probable attack of swarms of locusts in the NCT of Delhi, all concerned authorities are advised to take the preventive measures. The migrating pests are reportedly present in the neighbouring states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, may head to the national capital soon. To control and eradicate the locusts to avoid devastating effect on standing Agricultural and Horticultural crops, vegetation, plants, gardens, orchards, it is advised that the concerned authorities organise awareness programs for public, farmers. The government notice said that as the swarm usually fly in the day time, and rest during night time, therefore the locusts should not be allowed to rest especially during night. The circular further suggested the concerned authorities to carry out spraying of certain pesticides/ insecticides, as per the need during night, with the help of spraying equipment. Meanwhile, parts of Uttar Pradesh have also been alerted of a probable locust attack. The Noida administration is on its toes and is making all the efforts to spread awareness about the migrating pests. Farmers of Madhya Pradesh have resorted to banging utensils to keep the locust away which are attacking their farms.
