Delhi: 2000 Live Cartridges Recovered Ahead Of I-Day, Six Arrested. Terror Angle Not Ruled Out, Say Police

New Delhi: In a serious development, 2000 live cartridges have been recovered in Delhi ahead of the 75th Independence Day. Delhi Police busted a syndicate involved in the smuggling of ammunition and recovered a huge quantity of ammunition.

Six accused have been arrested in this matter. As per inputs, East Delhi Police arrested the suppliers with two bags from the Anand Vihar area.

Vikramjit Singh, ACP, Eastern Range informed that the consignment was intended for Lucknow, UP. "Prima facie it appears to be a part of criminal network. Terror angle not ruled out," he said, as reported by news agency ANI.

"6 persons including two persons transporting the consignment, a gun house owner from Dehradun, one person each from Roorkee and Dehradun and one handler from Jaunpur arrested," he added.

This comes as security in the national capital has been beefed up ahead of the 76th Independence Day celebrations.

Ahead of I-Day, 70 to 75 forces comprising 5,000 para-military and police personnel were deployed near Red Fort in North Delhi besides the Security wing and National Security Guards of Delhi Police.

Apart from the previously 500 CCTV cameras installed in January, the police have now installed 310 other cameras which are known to possess a higher quality, come with video analytics, and can signal on realising any 'suspicious' activity, news agency ANI reported.

Sagar Singh Kalsi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) told ANI that one police personnel is always stationed at these camera sites to monitor the situation for any suspicious activity so that necessary action can be taken up without any delay.

He also said that they get equal support from the commoners who inform the officials as soon as they spot any suspicious activity in their area. 

"The Station House Officer (SHO) of the Burari Police Station went to the schools there and emphasised students to not fly kites from 6 am to 9 am on August 13 to August 15," DCP Kalsi added.

He mentioned that apart from the VVIPs around 10,000 people will also attend the Independence Day programme on August 15.
