Cyclone Nivar Update: Bengaluru Put On Yellow Alert For Next 2 Days; 3 Dead In Tamil Nadu, 1 In Andhra Pradesh

Cyclone Nivar: In view of Cyclone Nivar, the India Meteorological Department on Thursday issued a yellow alert in Bengaluru and surrounding districts of Karnataka on November 26 and 27. The cyclone uprooted over 1,000 trees and some low-lying areas marooned due to water-logging following heavy rains on Thursday as severe cyclonic storm Nivar made landfall near Puducherry. CS Patil, director of IMD Karnataka told the media that districts such as Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagar, and Mandya are likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall due to the Nivar effect. He added that severe cyclone-storm Nivar that has crossed Puducherry has transformed into cyclone-storm and moving towards north-west direction weaken into a deep depression in the next six hours. "During this period Bengaluru and surrounding districts are likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall," he said. Cyclone Nivar is the second cyclone after Amphan, which was formed over the Bay of Bengal and hit the Indian coastal states. Nivar made its landfall between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast on Wednesday midnight. Nivar weakened into a cyclonic storm and further into a deep depression, centered about 50 km west-southwest of Tirupati at 1430 hrs, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said. According to IMD, it is to weaken into a depression during the next six hours. Havoc wreaked in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh According to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami, as part of the rescue operation, as many as 2.30 lakh people have been accommodated in relief camps following the cyclone. Earlier, heavy rains lashed Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as Nivar made landfall in the early hours, leading to inundation and uprooting of trees. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, under the influence of severe cyclone Nivar, ranging from 6 cm to 30 cm wreaked havoc to crops in thousands of acres in several districts of Andhra Pradesh and left one person dead, besides damaging the road network on Thursday. Another farmer was feared washed away while National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel rescued two others from a reservoir in Chittoor district of the state, including districts bordering Tamil Nadu, were lashed by heavy rains since Wednesday evening.
