Cyclone Hamoon Centred Over Bangladesh Coast, To Weaken Into Deep Depression In 6 Hours: Details

The IMD said that the cyclonic storm Hamoon over coastal Bangladesh is set to weaken into a deep depression during the next six hours.

The India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday that the cyclonic storm Hamoon over coastal Bangladesh, centred about 40 km east-southeast of Chittagong, is set to move northeastwards and weaken into a deep depression during the next six hours.

“The Cyclonic Storm Hamoon over coastal Bangladesh lay centered at 0530 hours IST of 25th Oct about 40 km east-southeast of Chittagong (Bangladesh). To move northeastwards and weaken into a deep depression during next 06 hours and further into a depression during subsequent 06 hours,” the weather office said.

Earlier, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, in a special weather bulletin, said that all fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain in shelter.

“Maritime Ports Of Chattogram And Cox’S Bazar Have Been Advised To Lower danger Singal no. seven but instead to Hoist local Cautionary Signal three (R) three. Maritime Ports of Mongla and Payra have been advised to Lower Danger signak no. five but instead to hoist local Cautionary three (R) three,” the bulletin read.

Earlier on Tuesday, IMD has said that cyclonic storm 'Hamoon' has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal. The weatherman said the cyclone is likely to continue moving in a north-northeastward direction. The storm will make landfall on the Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Chittagong on October 25, 2023, as a deep depression. Meanwhile, the weather agency has issued rain alerts in seven states, which will see the impact of the cyclone.

The warnings say rain is likely at most places in the northeastern states of Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, and south Assam from Oct 24-26. Heavy rainfall is expected in Mizoram on October 24, with even heavier showers anticipated in Tripura. Heavy rain is likely to continue in the regions on October 25, which will decrease by October 26, with light to moderate rainfall at a few places.

Light to moderate rainfall is expected in south Assam and eastern Meghalaya on October 24-25, with the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall in south Assam, according to IMD. The coastal districts of Odisha will most likely witness light to moderate rainfall at most places on Tuesday, October 24.
