Cyclone Biparjoy To Hit Gujarat On Thursday, Authorities Race Against Time To Evacuate People. Top Points

The central and Gujarat governments are on their toes as the state braces for the landfall of Cyclone Biparjoy on Thursday. Maharashtra is also bearing the impact of Cyclone Biparjoy with four deaths already. The four were swept away by strong waves on Mumbai's Juhu beach. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is on high alert as well and has kept several teams ready for action as well as on standby in case of emergencies. The Cyclone as also affected railway and flight traffic in the western part of India.

- The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that Cyclone Biparjoy would turn into an 'extremely severe cyclonic storm'. It will move northwards till June 14 and then towards the Saurashtra-Kutch coast, which it will cross by noon on June 15.

- The IMD has issued an orange alert on June 14 for the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts due to Cyclone Biparjoy raging over the east-central and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea. A Red Alert has been issued for June 15 for all the coastal districts. It will also be the third cyclone to hit Gujarat in June since 1965, the meteorological office said.
- The district administration of Maharashtra's Palghar has banned the movement of people along the coast in light of the deaths of four people at Juhu beach in Mumbai.
- The Union Home Secretary has asked respective officials to ensure that an adequate number of teams and resources from the NDRF, Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard are deployed to support the Gujarat government in their efforts related to preparedness, rescue, and restoration.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday asked officials to "take every possible measure to ensure evacuation of people living in vulnerable locations". He issued the directions at a meeting to review the preparedness for Cyclone Biparjoy. "Ensure maintenance of essential services with preparedness for immediate restoration in event of damage," he told officials.
- The NDRF has deployed additional teams along the western coast. It has deployed two teams in addition to the three already available in Mumbai as a precautionary measure. It has also moved four other teams to Gujarat and has kept the Pune units ready.
- As many as 67 trains of the Western Railway have been cancelled so far. Due to Cyclone Biparjoy, the number of cancelled trains will go up to 95 by June 15.
- Flights movement were also hit. Several airlines were forced to cancel flights as the cyclone raged over the Arabian Sea, while many were forced to delay landings due to the inclement weather.
