'Biparjoy' Intensifies Into Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm, Yellow Alert In Gujarat Coasts — Updates

Cyclone Biparjoy intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm today and is predicted to not hit Gujarat as per the current IMD forecast, however, it will cause thunderstorm activity in coastal areas.

The very severe cyclonic storm 'Biparjoy' intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm on Sunday, but as per the current forecast, it may not hit Gujarat. IMD issued Yellow Cyclone Alert for Saurashtra and Kutch Coast as Biparjoy lay over eastcentral Arabian Sea at 08:30 AM IST today, about 460 km south-southwest of Porbandar and 510 km south-southwest of Dwarka. It is likely to make landfall between the Kutch district of Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan on June 15, the IMD stated.

"Cyclone Alert for Saurashtra and Kutch Coast: Yellow Message. ESCS BIPARJOY lay over eastcentral Arabian Sea at 0830 IST today,460 km SSW of Porbandar,510 km SSW of Dwarka,600 km SSW of Naliya. To cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adj Pakistan coasts around noon of 15 June as VSCS," IMD tweeted.

It will reach near Pakistan and adjoining Saurashtra and Kutch coasts around the afternoon of June 15, 2023, as per the IMD.

Cyclone Biparjoy CM Reviews Preparedness, Landfall Likely Between Kutch & Karachi —  Top Updates

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the State Emergency Operation Center to review the preparedness of coastal districts of the state against possible cyclones. A video conference was held with all the officials of the potentially affected area, news agency ANI reported.

    Chief Secretary Rajkumar, DGP Vikas Sahay, Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey, and heads of the Revenue Department, Energy Department, and Road Building Department joined the meeting. After preliminary discussion with all heads of department, the Collectors and concerned officials of the potentially affected districts also joined through video conference.
  • Biparjoy is likely to make landfall between the Kutch district of Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan on June 15, the IMD said, as per news agency PTI.
  • The cyclone is likely to pass at a distance of 200-300 km from the Porbandar coast but will bring thunderstorms and strong wind in the western state in the next five days.

  • Prior to this, the IMD said the very severe cyclonic storm 'Biparjoy' is very likely to move north-northeastwards gradually during the next 24 hours, before moving north-north-westward during the subsequent three days.

    "The cyclonic storm currently lays 600 km from Porbandar. As it approaches, the port signal warning will be changed accordingly. For now, the cyclone is likely to pass from a distance of 200-300 km from Porbandar and 200 km from Nalia (Kutch). As far as the current forecast is concerned, it is not likely to hit Gujarat," said the director of the Ahmedabad IMD (India Meteorological Department) centre, Manorama Mohanty told PTI.

  • According to the IMD Ahmedabad director, the cyclone is moving in the near northerly direction which continues for now. It is likely to change its movement to northeastward and thereafter, the movement of the cyclone will be north-northwestward. "It is very likely to intensify further and move north-northeastwards gradually during the next 24 hours. Then it would move gradually north-northwestwards during the subsequent three days," the IMD said.

  • According to the IMD forecast, the cyclone is not likely to hit Gujarat in the next five days.

  • However, Gujarat will witness thunderstorm activity during the next five days with wind speed remaining high especially in the Saurashtra-Kutch region. "During the next two days, the Saurashtra-Kutch region will witness a wind speed of up to 30-40 kmph. Thereafter, the region may witness wind speed of up to 30-50 kmph gusting to 50 kmph, especially in coastal areas during June 13-15," Mohanty said, as quoted by PTI.

  • Wind speed inside the sea will gradually increase from Sunday ranging from 35-45 kmph to 50 kmph of Saturday to 40-50 kmph gusting to 55 kmph, then to 50-60 kmph on June 12 and from 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph on Jun 13-14, as per the IMD.

  • The cyclone will bring a comparatively strong wind, especially in coastal districts such as Porbandar and Kutch, and Jamnagar gusting to 60 kmph and increasing to 75 kmph, the IMD Ahmedabad director said.

  • Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been dispatched to the districts of Porbandar, Gir Somnath, and Valsad.

  • The Indian Coast Guard began an outreach to advise the fishing community, seafarers, and stakeholders of Gujarat, Daman and Diu to take requisite precautions and safety measures. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the Arabian Sea during the next five days and all fishing activities have been suspended.

  • The ICG units are also broadcasting regular advisories to vessels at sea through ships, aircraft, and RADAR stations.
