Biparjoy Brings Heavy Rains, Strong Winds To Rajasthan As It Weakens Into Depression

A ‘Red Alert’ was issued in Barmer, Jalore, and Sirohi districts of the state by the MeT department where moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to continue for 3 to 4 hours.

Parts of Rajasthan have been witnessing heavy rains with strong winds after Cyclone Biparjoy started moving in the north-east direction. As per India Meteorological Department, the cyclone formed a deep depression at midnight on June 16 and entered Rajasthan. “Cyclone Biparjoy has weakened and is in the form of a deep depression, on 16th June at midnight, it entered Rajasthan through the adjoining areas of Jalore and Barmer...it has further weakened and become a depression as of now and is moving towards north-east direction...": Radheshyam Sharma, Director at Meteorological Center in Jaipur told news agency ANI. 

Visuals shared by the news agency show heavy rains and a flood-like situation in Barmer with knee-deep water while Jalore witnessed strong winds and rain under the influence of the cyclone. 

Other parts of Rajasthan as well received rainfall including Sirohi, Bikaner, and Jodhpur. On Saturday, Sirohi received a rainfall of 37.5 millimetres till 5.30 pm, Jalore 36 mm, Barmer 33.6, Bikaner 26.6 mm, Dabok 13 mm, Dungarpur 12.5 mm and 10.5 mm in Jodhpur as per a PTI report. 

A ‘Red Alert’ was issued in Barmer, Jalore, and Sirohi districts of the state by the MeT department where moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to continue for 3 to 4 hours. “Orange Alert” has been issued for Pali and Jodhpur, the report added. 

Meanwhile, a ‘Yellow Alert’ was issued for Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Churu, Sikar, Nagaur, Jhunjhunu, Ajmer, Udaipur, Rajsamand, Jaipur, Jaipur City, Dausa, Alwar, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, Tonk, Bundi and Kota.

In the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Saturday, a rainfall of 210 mm was recorded in Mount Abu, 136 mm in Barmer’s Sedwa, 135 mm in Mount Abu tehsil, 110 mm in Raniwada of Jalore, 76 mm in Churu’s Bidasaria, 68 mm in Reodar, 59 mm in Sanchor, 57 mm in Pindwara, 49 mm each in Gogunda and Girva, 47 mm in Jalore, 46 mm each in Sindri and Jaswantpura of Jalore and 40 mm in Jhadol.

Abu Road recorded a rainfall of 38 mm, Kotda 35 mm, Sirohi 30 mm, Kumbhalgarh 26 mm, and 25.7 mm in Udaipur during this period, the MeT said.

Union railways minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Sunday informed that railway tracks were breached at five places in Rajasthan due to the cyclone and that "railways took timely action and diverted passenger trains."

"Work is going at war footing to restore the tracks," he added.
