Assure That Nagarnar Steel Plant Won't Be 'Privatised': Chhattisgarh CM Tells PM Modi Ahead Of Oct 3 Visit
Chattisgarh CM Baghel stated that the Centre's decision will severely harm tribal people's expectations and ambitions.
Chattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Sunday accused the Centre of attempting to privatise the Nagarnar steel factory in Bastar district, news agency PTI reported. Speaking at a joint press conference, CM Baghel stated: “PM Modi is coming here and he should assure the people of Bastar and Chhattisgarh that Nagarnar Steel Plant won’t be sold to a private buyer."

He said: ''In 2020, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I had urged not to privatise the upcoming steel plant and in the same year, the Chhattisgarh assembly had passed a resolution stating that the House urges the Centre not to disinvest the plant. And if it is done, the state government is ready to buy it."
CM Baghel stated that the Centre's decision will severely harm tribal people's expectations and ambitions. "The land of Nagarnar is of Adivasis and farmers...The land was given to NMDC to build a steel plant... At that time we protested, but they were not offered compensation, rehabilitation, or jobs. For this Bastar Congress protested... When we were in opposition, we wrote letters to do their rehabilitation and give them jobs. When we came to power, we passed a government resolution that if NMDC is not able to operate a steel plant, then the state government will run it. But the central government did not agree to this," he stated.

Slamming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Jagdalpur on Tuesday, CM Baghel said: "PM Modi is continuously coming(here)... He said that they have given Rs 1 lakh crore for paddy... I would like to say to the PM that in 2014 there was a double-engine government, and at that time you said you would buy 10 quintal paddy... But in the next three years, there was a consistent decrease in paddy procurement... And now you are saying that you will buy each grain of paddy... I would like to say to PM that if you want to buy each grain of paddy, then before coming here again on October 3rd give an order that the Central Government will buy each grain of paddy."

PM Modi is expected to dedicate the NSP to the country during his visit to Jagdalpur. On the same day, the Congress would hold a bandh in Bastar to protest the Centre's proposal to divest NSP, according to Baghel.
The ruling Congress in Chhattisgarh has called for a Bastar shutdown on the day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Jagdalpur on Tuesday, saying that the Centre is intending to privatise the NMDC Nagarnar steel mill in the area.
The prime minister is set to address a BJP rally during his visit to the Bastar district headquarters in the poll-bound state.
The Bastar division is divided into seven districts. Last month, the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), a Central Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), began production at its Nagarnar Steel Plant.
