'Centre Free To Take Action,' Says Delhi HC; Twitter Seeks 8 Weeks To Comply With IT Rules

Twitter on its part informed the High Court that it will take another eight weeks to appoint a Resident Grievance Officer (RGO) in compliance with the new IT Rules.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday said the Central government is free to take any action against Twitter if it finds the social media platform breaching the Information Technology (IT) Rules.

Twitter on its part informed the High Court that it will take another eight weeks to appoint a Resident Grievance Officer (RGO) in compliance with the new IT Rules.

Clarifying the stand on the issue of compliance under the new IT Rules, Twitter in an affidavit told the High Court that it was in the process of setting up a liaison office in India.

The Delhi Court has adjourned further hearing in the matter for July 28.

Earlier on Tuesday, Twitter told the Delhi High Court that it has not yet complied with the Centre’s new Information Technology rules.

The social media platform, however, added that it is currently in the process of doing so.

The Delhi High Court had then directed Twitter to inform it by July 8 as to when it will appoint a RGO in compliance with the new IT Rules.

The Centre had earlier answered in the affirmative when asked during a Public Interest Litigation (PIL)  hearing whether the social media giant was in defiance of the new IT rules.
