Cannabis Cultivation In Himachal Gets Sukhu Cabinet's In-Principle Nod

The Himachal Pradesh cabinet led by Sukhvinder Singh Sukkhu has decided in-principle to legalise cannabis cultivation in the state.

Cannabis Farming In Himachal: The Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government of Himachal Pradesh has given its in-principle approval to the cultivation of cannabis, which is otherwise illegal. Cannabis cultivation has been legal only in two states in India so far — Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh. However, the cultivation is limited and conditional to the end product being used only for medical and industrial purposes.

The Sukhu government has also decided to rename the Degree College in Rohru as Raja Veerbhadra Singh Government Degree College. Former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Veerbhadra Singh, passed away on December 27, 2017. His son, Vikramaditya Singh, is currently a minister in the Sukhu Cabinet. Singh's wife is the president of the Himachal Pradesh Congress.

Some time ago, when the Singh family was upset with CM Sukkhu, they said that Veerbhadra Singh was not given due respect. Vikramaditya Singh had also raised the issue of land for his father's memorial, after which both parties reached an agreement after the intervention of the Congress high command.

Key Decisions Of The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet

The Cabinet also approved the implementation of the homestay policy in Himachal Pradesh, which aims to curb illegal homestays in the state.

The Cabinet also decided to award Rs 7 lakh compensation to owners of houses that were burnt down in Tandi in Kullu district. Approval was given to provide Rs 1 lakh for partially burnt houses and Rs 50,000 for cowsheds.

The Cabinet also approved the purchase of 24 new VS6 Volvo buses for the HRTC fleet.

Aother Cabinet decision paved the way to start Robotic surgery in the state's Indira Gandhi Medical College & Hospital, Chamiyana and Tanda Medical Colleges. For this, world-class machines will be installed on the lines of AIIMS-Delhi.

The Sukkhu government has approved the purchase of 50 Bolero vehicles for the PWD department and 100 bikes for field inspectors in the Excise Department. This will help tackle the smuggling of liquor in the state.
