BRICS summit 2017: Combating terrorism is the key focus

New Delhi: The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa joined hands at the ninth BRICS summit themed as “BRICS: Stronger Partnership for a Brighter Future”, held on Monday, 4 September 2017. Chinese President Jinping initiated the occasion by saying, “Though separated by mountains and oceans, BRICS countries have been closely bound by shared commitment to win-win cooperation” This was the first time when terror group of Pakistan namely Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and the Haqqani were condemned for their terrorist actions on BRICS platform. In a declaration made by BRICS, they appealed all nations to unite against terrorism, expanding in the world. A request was expressly made to obstruct financing of terrorists via unknown sources. The grouping censured terrorism of any kind and groups such as Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Tehrik –i- Taliban and so on were mentioned .This was the first time that the series of terrorist groups were listed in the summit. This certainly symbolizes the seriousness with which the subject of terror campaign has been recognized and acknowledged by the BRICS group. The aim is to attain an International peace and tranquility. China and Pakistan have been close allies, especially after the start of CPEC project(China Pakistan Economic Corridor) and China has repetitively obstructed India’s attempt to put Pakistan’s Jaish-e-Mohammed Chief Masood Azhar as‘a terrorist’ ,while countries such as US, UK , France supported India . This was the first time when terrorism and Pakistan were both discussed on same frontline in the presence of China The BRICS declaration strongly condemned the nuclear test conducted by Democratic People’s Republic of Korea that might lead to a second Korean war and has the potential to kill millions of people in South Korea or Japan within seconds.
