Watch: BJP workers clash with police over challan issued during checking in Meerut

MEERUT: BJP workers became unruly and clashed with the police in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut city after a traffic challan was issued to a son of BJP corporator. Police and BJP corporator Ashu Rastogi along with his supporters came face to face during a checking drive at Surajkund intersection near Sitaram Pulia and in city's Civil Lines area. The incident took place on Wednesday evening when Civil Lines SO issued a challan to BJP' corporator's son Subh Rastogi for violating traffic rules. The officer asked Subh for papers of the two-wheeler he's driving but he failed to do so. Annoyed with this entire episode, BJP leader reached the checking spot with his supporters and clashed with police. The incident also cast a shadow over functioning of Yogi Adityanath government as several instances of BJP workers engaging in scuffle with police officers were reported across the state. Recently, a police officer Shrestha Thakur, who waded into controversy after a row with a local BJP leader in Bulandshahr was transferred by the state government. She had hogged the newspaper headlines when she penalised a BJP leader in Bulandshahr for violating rules. The video of her heated argument with BJP's Syana city president Mukesh Bhardwaj had gone viral on social media. Bhardwaj had reached the spot allegedly after the police slapped a fine on BJP worker Pramod Kumar for driving a motorcycle "without any documents, number plate and helmet" on June 22. The wordy duel between Thakur and Bhardwaj started after the police officer slapped a fine on Pramod who then called the local BJP office-bearers including Bhardwaj. In the video, Thakur was seen telling the BJP leader that she would ask police officials not to check any vehicles if he got a letter from chief minister asking her to do so. (With PTI inputs)
