BJP wins mayoral polls in South, East MCD
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday won the mayoral posts in both the South and East Delhi municipal bodies.
While Satya Sharma was elected the mayor of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), Shyam Sharma got the post in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).
A total of 99 votes were polled in SDMC, with Jankpuri North councillor Shyam Sharma securing 62 votes and Praveen Rana of Congress from Bijwasan getting 37 votes.
Shashi Prabha of BJP was elected the deputy mayor. She defeated Shatish Gupta of the Congress.
Of the 60 votes polled in EDMC, New Usmanpur councillor Satya Sharma secured 41 and Taj Mohammed of Congress 18 votes. One vote was invalid and five councillors did not vote.
Raj Kumar Dhillon of BJP was elected the deputy mayor. He defeated Raj Kumari of the Congress by 23 votes.
BJP councillors Jeetendra Chaudhary and Sanjay Jain and Savita Sharma of Congress were unanimously declared members of the Standing Committee in EDMC.
BJP councillors Subhash Arya and Shailendra Singh Monty and Congress councillor Farhad Suri were unanimously declared members of the Standing Committee in SDMC.
