ABP-CVoter Survey: Political Conspiracy Or Police Failure? See What People Think Of Atiq Ahmed's Murder

The murder of Atiq Ahmed and encounter of his son has kicked up a massive political storm. ABP-CVoter tries to gauge the people's pulse on the issue with a quick survey.

As the news of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed's murder in police custody dominates the headlines, ABP-CVoter conducted a quick survey to understand what the people thought about the incident. While Opposition leaders attacked the BJP government over the murders of Atiq and his brother Ahmed, spokespersons of the ruling BJP were seen providing defence for the police, going as far as to call the incident "divine justice".

Atiq Ahmad was assassinated on the same day his son Asad Ahmad was buried after being killed in an alleged encounter with UP police.

The Uttar Pradesh government has formed a three-member judicial committee to investigate Atiq Ahmad's death. Arvind Kumar Tripathi, a former Allahabad high court judge, will chair the panel, which will also comprise retired judge BK Soni and ex-DGP Subesh Kumar Singh.

In the survey, ABP-CVoter asked people questions like whether the murder was a result of police failure or an outcome of political conspiracy and if it would affect the ruling BJP in any manner. Here's what the survey revealed.

What do you consider the murder of Atiq-Ashraf in police custody?

Police failure: 14%
Political conspiracy: 24%
He was a mafia. Doesn't matter how he died: 51%
Don't know: 11%

What do you think about the encounter?

In the survey, another question asked was what did people think about the encounter of criminals in Uttar Pradesh? Here's what the respondents said:

Right and moral: 50%
Right, but not ethical: 28%
Neither right nor ethical: 13%
Can't say: 9%

Respondents were also asked whether the murders of Atiq and Ashraf and the encounter of Atiq's son Asad would impact the BJP. Here's how they responded:

BJP will benefit: 47%
There will be no impact: 26%
BJP will be negatively impacted: 17%
Don't know: 10%

[Disclaimer: C-Voter conducted the survey for ABP Live. The results of the survey are completely based on the interaction with the people and the opinion expressed by them, and ABP Live is not responsible for the same. The quick survey was conducted after the murder of Atiq Ahmed and the encounter of his son Asad. A total of 1,700 respondents from Uttar Pradesh were interviewed for the survey between April 15 and 17. The same is also expected to have a margin of error of ±3 to ±5% and may not necessarily have factored in all criteria.]
