Assam Mizoram Border Dispute: All vehicles entering Assam will be screened for illegal drugs by Assam Police at all Assam-Mizoram border entry points.
Assam-Mizoram Border Dispute: Keeping in view the prevailing violence along the Assam-Mizoram border, all vehicles entering Assam will be checked for 'illicit drugs' at all points of entry on the Assam-Mizoram border.
On 26th July, six state police officers and a civilian were killed and over 50 injured in border clashes and indiscriminate firing between Assam and Mizoram.
The violence along the border was possible because of the recent crackdown on drug trafficking under the leadership of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. 912 cases have been registered within two months. 1,560 persons have been arrested and a huge quantity of illegal drugs, including 20.678 kg of heroin, 15 kg of opium, and 1.9 kg of morphine, have been seized.
They were disposed of under the supervision of Himanta Biswa Sarma at four places in Assam. Steps have been taken to address the smuggling of illegal drugs through Mizoram which poses a great threat to society in general. Most of the drugs are transported from across the border through Mizoram and Assam.
The notice issued by the Government of Assam also states that if no illegal drugs are found in the vehicles, they will be allowed to pass after the approval of a police officer (who is not below the rank of sub-inspector).
