Andhra Businessman Arrested For 'Murdering Sister To Claim Rs 1 Crore Insurance Payout'

Struggling with heavy debts, the 30-year-old man allegedly hatched a plan to take out multiple life insurance policies in her name, kill her, and stage the death as an accident to claim the payout.

A real estate businessman in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district has been arrested for allegedly murdering his younger sister to fraudulently claim a Rs 1 crore insurance payout. The accused, identified as 30-year-old Malapati Ashok Kumar, was taken into custody on Tuesday for the crime, which occurred on February 2, 2024, near a petrol station in Podili.

Kumar’s younger sister was divorced and had no children. Struggling with heavy debts, he allegedly hatched a plan to take out multiple life insurance policies in her name, kill her, and stage the death as an accident to claim the payout. Investigators uncovered that he had carefully orchestrated the crime, ensuring the policies were secured before carrying out his scheme, as per a report on PTI.

According to police, Kumar, who was struggling with mounting debts, meticulously planned the murder by first securing multiple insurance policies in his sister’s name, as per a reported India Today. He then orchestrated her death to make it appear as an accident intending to claim the insurance money.

On the day of the incident, Kumar convinced his sister to accompany him to Ongole for a hospital visit. During the return journey, he allegedly gave her sleeping pills before smothering her to death inside the car. He later attempted to stage the crime scene to mislead investigators.

Following a detailed investigation, police arrested Kumar and charged him under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 302 (murder), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence). Authorities are now probing whether he had accomplices or had attempted similar fraudulent schemes in the past.

The arrest comes as a sensational case rocked Andhra Pradesh's Meerapet. A former jawan reportedly murdered his wife, chopped her body and pressure cooked them to escape arrest.
