Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury criticised the price hike saying, "If there is an increase in the price of Amul milk, the common man will be affected. Maybe Modi ji and Amit Shah ji do not drink milk, but it is necessary for children of our country to drink milk. The government has made its intention clear by increasing the price of milk", news agency ANI reported.
In October last year, the brand increased prices of its full-cream milk and buffalo milk prices by Rs 2 per litre in all states excluding Gujarat. Before this, the price was raised by Rs 2 per litre in August 2022. Mother Dairy had also increased the cost of milk by Rs 2 per litre in the Delhi-NCR area during the same month.
The increase in retail milk prices, despite higher-than-expected increases in procurement prices, transport expenses, and packaging costs, will prevent the organised dairy sector's profitability from declining, the experts had said last year.
Notably, while addressing the 70th plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), Union Home Minister Amit Shah had stated that Amul would be united with five other cooperative societies to establish a multi-state cooperative society.
