Hyundai To Offer Only A Petrol Powertrain On The Elantra Facelift

Though Hyundai plans to offer BS6-compliant diesel engines in its other models

Hyundai is set to launch the Elantra facelift on September 29 in India. However, the engine options may vary on the new Elantra. Even though the Korean carmaker plans to continue offering the Elite i20, Creta, Verna and the Venue with diesel engines, it does not intend to offer a diesel powertrain on the Elantra facelift. As of now, the Elantra comes with two engine setups: a 2.0-litre petrol unit which is capable of producing 152PS of max power and 192Nm of peak torque, and a 1.6-litre diesel engine that is good for 128PS of max power and 260Nm of peak torque. Both the units come with either a 6-speed manual or a torque converter automatic transmission option. Hyundai might introduce a diesel engine on the Elantra but only if there is sufficient demand post BS6 implementation. In that case, the brand will offer the BS6-compliant 1.5-litre diesel engine seen on the Kia Seltos, which could be downsized for the Elantra. The Elantra does not make up a huge part of Hyundai’s sales in India. Rather, it merely plugs a gap in its Indian lineup. It is currently priced between Rs 13.82 lakh and Rs 20.04 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
