Honda Civic Leads Segment Sales For April 2019

In a segment that doesn’t see cumulative sales of more than 1000 units a month, is it possible to create a monopoly?

March 2019 saw the comeback of the Civic in the Indian market, after a long gap of six years. Its sales for the month shot through the roof as Honda cashed in on the Civic’s nostalgia. Now that the initial frenzy has died down, its sales numbers have plummeted by over 80 per cent (month-on-month). The Civic, though, still managed to top the sales charts in April 2019, beating Skoda’s Octavia by 140 units. Here’s an analysis of mid-size sedan sales in the last month. Honda Civic Leads Segment Sales For April 2019 Takeaways Civic’s honeymoon is over: Reaching the summit of the table is easy, but staying put there is the real challenge. Honda sold 2,291 units of the Civic in March but as the hype died down, those numbers fell down to 369 units for April 2019. The Civic maybe at the top, but can it cement its place there? Skoda Octavia consistent with its numbers: Before the Civic arrived, it was the Octavia that was the king of the ring. And given the sharp drop in Civic’s numbers, the Octavia still has a chance to get back on top. The fact that the Skoda’s sedan sales for the last two months were more than its average monthly sales for the past six months will be a consolation for the Czech carmaker. Corolla Altis figures down for April: At only 177 units, sales of the Corolla Altis in April failed to reach its average sales figures mark for the last six months. The Japanese carmaker now faces an uphill task to make up lost ground in a segment where the addition of the Civic means competition is fiercer. Hyundai Elantra at rock bottom: It is not often that you come across a Hyundai car that does not sell well. But unfortunately, the Elantra has not been able to hit the 100 unit sales mark in a month for quite some time now and the sales figure of the Corolla Altis, its closest rival, are more than double. Other than the Civic, all cars in this segment will be updated in the near future. Skoda will launch the next-gen Octavia globally and Toyota will launch the new Corolla Altis in India in 2020. Hyundai will also be giving the Elantra a facelift this year. It will be interesting to see how well the Civic does in the long run. https://www.cardekho.com/india-car-news/honda-civic-leads-segment-sales-in-april-2019-too-23652.htm
