According to police, all CCTV cameras are being scanned to ascertain when the person entered the Golden Temple and how many people were with him.
Police said that information has been received that the accused was on the premises a few hours before carrying out the incident. In this regard, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa held a meeting with district deputy commissioner, commissioner of police, inspector general of police (Border range), senior superintendent of police of Amritsar rural and other officials.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Sukhchain Singh Gill said that an FIR has been registered against the unidentified person under Section 295A (provocation of hatred among religious groups), Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. He said that photographs from all the cameras installed in the Golden Temple have been obtained and they are being investigated to collect more information.
Gill added that it can be seen from the pictures that the accused arrived at the Golden Temple at 11am on Saturday and slept in front of the Akal Takht for a few hours. The incident took place at 6pm which means the accused had spent several hours in the Golden Temple before committing the crime, Gill said.
The accused on Saturday climbed over the railing at the Golden Temple and reached the sanctum sanctorum. He took the sword and reached near the Granthi where devotees were reciting Guru Granth Sahib.
He was caught by the task force members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) who came into action after the incident. When he was being taken to the SPGC office, he was beaten to death by the enraged devotees.
Randhawa said he has already spoken to the SGPC president and Akal Takht Jathedar after the incident. The Deputy Chief Minister said, "Mobile phones, wallet, identity card or Aadhaar card have not been recovered from the accused. It is known that he entered the Golden Temple at 11am and stayed in the premises for hours before executing the incident.''
Meanwhile, a large number of Sikh devotees and various Sikh organizations criticised the SGPC for its lax behaviour after the incident. Heavy police force has been deployed around the SGPC premises in Teja Singh Samudri Hall to maintain law and order.
