Background
As the New Year set in on Sunday, experts warned that the risk of Covid was the highest in January. However, people seemed to throw caution to the wind as large crowds thronged popular streets, tourist hubs, and entertainment centres across India and many joined special prayers at places of worship on Sunday to celebrate the New Year without adhering to any COVID-safety guidelines.
India saw a single-day rise of 265 new coronavirus infections and a decline in active cases to 2,706, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday. The total tally of COVID cases was recorded at 4.46 crore (4,46,78,649).
The toll so far stands at 5,30,705 with three fatalities — two in Kerala and one in Karnataka in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra logged 16 new COVID-19 cases, including four in Mumbai. As many as 14 new Covid cases were recorded in Delhi.
News agency IANS reported that a total of 53 International travellers have tested Covid-19 positive since the Centre started the 2% random testing process of the flyers at airports across the country on December 24.
Meanwhile, China is still grappling with a massive surge in Covid infections. Canada and Australia on Sunday became the latest addition to the list of countries demanding travellers from China to provide a negative Covid test report before arrival, citing a "lack of comprehensive information" from Beijing about the country's wave of cases. Canada has imposed the requirement for travellers from Hong Kong and Macau as well.
The list of countries imposing such restrictions on travellers from China now feature the US, India, the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Israel, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, and Canada.
According to Reuters, thousands of Chinese came out on the streets to mark the New Year as authorities and state media sought to reassure the public that the Covid-19 outbreak sweeping across the country was under control and nearing its peak.
