Coronavirus LIVE, August 10, Tuesday: Maharashtra COVID task force on Monday discussed the possibility of granting more relaxations in COVID-19 curbs while observing precautions, an official said, adding the government is identifying new areas and preparing guidelines.

The meeting of the task force, held in the evening, was attended by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, state chief secretary Sitaram Kunte, state COVID task force head Dr Sanjay Oak and other members.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday said that he would visit all districts bordering Kerala and Maharashtra by next week to take stock of the existing Covid situation.

As per the opinion of Covid Expert Committee, the number of Covid cases increased in Karnataka due to free movement of people from Kerala and Maharashtra. During the first wave also, Covid infection spread rapidly in the state for the same reason, Bommai said.

The Covid test positivity rate in Kerala continues to hover around 13 per cent, though the number of new Covid cases on Monday was 13,049, after 98,640 samples were tested in the past 24 hours, said a statement from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Monday's figures of new cases were lesser, compared to the previous days, since, generally on Sundays, the number of samples sent for testing is also less, compared to other days.

The statement also said that there were 1,69,512 active cases after 20,004 people turned negative.

There were 105 Covid deaths reported taking the death toll to 17,852.

Malappuram district, which has been recording the highest number of daily cases, continued to be in the lead with 2,052 people turning positive followed by Thrissur with 1,762.

Tamil Nadu logs 1,893 fresh cases, 27 deaths push toll to 34,367

Tamil Nadu continued to record a decline in new infections by adding 1,893 cases taking the overall tally to 25,79,130 till date, the Health department said on Tuesday. As many as 27 people succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, pushing the toll to 34,367.

Recoveries outnumbered new infections with 1,930 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 25,24,400 leaving 20,363 active cases, a medical bulletin said.

Caseload and positivity trend found to be more than 10 in Kerala: Dr SK Singh

Dr SK Singh, NCDC Director in a press briefing on Tuesday said, "Central Team was sent to Kerala. 1st, to see how the 'test-track-treat' strategy is being implemented, 2nd, surveillance of containment zones with contact tracing being an important factor, 3rd, to check infrastructure of hospitals and 4th, to see the progress of vaccination. Caseload and positivity trend was found to be more than 10. Some districts indicated an increasing trend of positivity rate - Malappuram, Kozhikode, Pathanamthitta. 80% of cases were found to be positive for Delta variant, like other states."
