Chennai: ABP Nadu on Thursday met Shankar Jiwal, the newly-appointed IPS officer in charge of the Greater Chennai Police for an exclusive interview. Speaking to the reporter, the Commissioner said that the police have taken steps against rowdies and goons to end their menace in Chennai.
Shankar Jiwal was appointed as the new Commissioner of Police for Chennai by Chief Minister MK Stalin. Jiwal has replaced Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal to lead Chennai Police.
Jiwal is a 1990-batch IPS officer and he was serving as the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for the Armed Police, Chennai.
Here are few excerpts from the interview:
ABP Nadu: How is Chennai Police functioning under your leadership? What divisions do you control in Chennai Police?
Shankar Jiwal: I took charge as the Commissioner of Greater Chennai Police on 8.05.2021. Under my leadership, the Chennai Police is functioning well. As the Chennai Commissioner, the Law and Order Division, Crime Division, Traffic Division, Traffic Investigation Division, Central Crime Division, Intelligence Division, Security Chennai Police Division, Prohibition Division, Modern Police Control Room, Crime Prevention Division against Women and Children, Armed Forces, Motor Vehicle Division are operational under supervision.
ABP Nadu: How is the public cooperating with police during the pandemic? What co-operation does Police seek?
Shankar Jiwal: Cooperation, in general, is good. Only a few bunches of people create problems refuting Covid-19 protocols. This is the time when the Police have to be more patient. If everyone obeys the law without questioning the rules, it will help the Police to function better.
ABP Nadu: How many hours a day are fixed for the Police to work in Chennai? Do they have a weekend holiday?
Shankar Jiwal: Generally it is the 8 hours shift in 3 rotational shifts. However, the working hours stretch during fieldwork hunting criminals, or when major law and order is being adjusted. Also, they have weekends off. Most of the time police voluntarily work on their weekly offs as they are paid for it over time while working on holidays.
Speaking on various criminal activities in the city, the Commissioner said that his department is taking stringent actions against goons and rowdies to curb the crime in the Tamil Nadu capital.
