Justice Chandrachud To Become 50th Chief Justice of India
Senior-most Supreme Court judge and CJI-designate Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud is all set to become the 50th head of the Indian judiciary on Wednesday when President Draupadi Murmu would administer the oath of office to him at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.
His father YV Chandrachud was the longest-serving Chief Justice of India (CJI) and remained at the helm from February 22, 1978, to July 11, 1985.
Justice Chandrachud will serve as the CJI for two years till November 10, 2024. Supreme Court judges retire at the age of 65.
He succeeds Uday Umesh Lalit, who had recommended him as his successor to the Centre on October 11. President Draupadi Murmu appointed him as the next CJI on October 17.
Justice Chandrachud, born on November 11, 1959, was elevated to the top court on May 13, 2016.
He has been part of several Constitution benches and landmark verdicts of the top court including on matters relating to the Ayodhya land dispute, the right to privacy, and adultery.
Kharge To Campaign As Congress Chief For First Time In Himachal
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday arrived in Shimla on a two-day visit to poll-bound Himachal Pradesh. Kharge will address a poll meeting at Banuti in Shimla and at Panjhera in Nalagarh on Wednesday before returning to Delhi.
Kharge would be campaigning in favour of party candidates for the first time as the Congress chief. Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat will be the first challenge for Kharge, who has assumed the new role of Congress president taking over from Sonia Gandhi who held the top post for over two decades.
Delhi Likely To See Rain On Wednesday
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast generally cloudy sky with the possibility of light rain or drizzle on Wednesday. The maximum and minimum temperatures on Wednesday are likely to hover around 30 and 17 degrees Celsius.
A layer of smoky haze shrouded Delhi on Tuesday as its air quality deteriorated to the upper end of the "very poor" category due to calmer winds. The air quality is forecast to become worse over the next two days due to unhelpful meteorological conditions.
Imran Khan's Party To Resume Long March On Wednesday
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's long march, which was suspended after the failed assassination attempt on party chief Imran Khan last week, will resume on Wednesday.
During a press conference in Lahore, former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the move sent a clear message to party workers and the nation that the march would continue on its journey until "haqeeqi azadi (real freedom) is obtained".
Qureshi said that Khan, who is currently recovering from his injuries, would give speeches via video link as the march moves onward.
