Maharashtra: Jarange-Patil announces fresh round of protests from Feb 24
Despite the state legislature passing a bill on Tuesday to provide a 10% quota to the Maratha community, Manoj Jarange-Patil remained dissatisfied and announced a new round of statewide protests on Wednesday, beginning February 24. The reservation activist, who is sceptical that the bill will stand up to legal scrutiny, wants the government to keep the promises it made to him about including Marathas in the Other Backward Classes category.
Beginning February 24, Maratha community members will hold daily rasta rokos (road blockades) across the state from 10:30 AM to 1 PM and 4 PM to 7 PM. Jarange-Patil has urged the community not to allow Lok Sabha election campaigning in their villages if the government does not accept its demand within two days, and to ignore politicians entirely. He has also asked them not to use violence while staging the agitations.
