Breaking News, May 2, Sunday: The Maharashtra government on Saturday declared West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh as ‘places of sensitive origin’ as coronavirus cases from these two states continue to be reported in record numbers.Counting of votes will be held in the high-stakes Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry assembly elections, overshadowed by the raging COVID pandemic

Background
Only over a thousand people were inoculated in Mumbai on Saturday, even as people in the 18-44 age group became eligible to enroll themselves for the mass Covid-19 vaccination drive across the country. Official data showed 1004 people in Mumbai got the jab, while the vaccination tally for Maharashtra’s 18-45 age group stood at 11,492.
Till April 30, only those above 45 were eligible to get Covid-19 vaccines. On Saturday, Pune topped among 26 districts with 1,316 receiving the jab in the above-18 group, followed by 1,004 in Mumbai. Gadchiroli (83) and Yavatmal (90) were at the bottom of the chart, data showed.
Counting of votes is being held in the high-stakes Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry assembly elections, overshadowed by the raging COVID pandemic, as the BJP seeks to consolidate its hold over more states and the Congress along with its allies attempts to regain lost turf. There will be 2,364 counting halls as compared to 1,002 halls in 2016 in 822 assemble constituencies, a more than 200 per cent increase, in view of the COVID guidelines, according to the Election Commission which had drawn flak from the courts over the conduct of polls during the pandemic.
