BMW G310 Twins India Sales In 2018 Better Than Expected

The German marque sold 2,187 units in calendar year 2018, among which the G 310 Twins accounted for over 75 per cent

  • 75 per cent of 2187 units amounts to over 1640 units, which is the G 310 Twins’ contribution to total BMW Motorrad sales in calendar year 2018.
  • The naked costs Rs 2.99 lakh while the mini ADV commands a price tag of Rs 3.49 lakh.
  • Despite the premium pricing, the two bikes have performed commendably well in the market.

BMW G310 Twins India Sales In 2018 Better Than Expected

BMW Motorrad forayed into the 300cc segment with the launch of the G 310 R and the G 310 GS in July last year. Starting at Rs 2.99 lakh for the G 310 R and Rs 3.49 lakh for the G 310 GS (both ex-showroom pan-India), the motorcycles were quite premium for the displacement and features on offer. We had even analysed the bikes’ India pricing with respect to the pricing in the US and European markets. But despite their premium pricing, the two bikes have raked in healthy numbers in six months since its launch.

BMW Motorrad says it sold 2187 motorcycles last calendar year, with over 75 per cent of the sales coming from the G 310 twins. If you do the math, it amounts to over 1640 units in six months (July to December 2018). In December last year, the German brand offered year-end cash discounts, and even free insurance. And we believe such initiatives have helped in attracting more customers. Moreover, the luxury brand’s image itself could also be one of the reasons why customers are thronging to own an affordable piece of German engineering.

BMW G310 Twins India Sales In 2018 Better Than Expected

While its primary rival, the KTM 390 Duke retails close to 500 units a month, BMW Motorrad’s monthly numbers are relatively lower. But then again, BMW Motorrad never wanted to get into the numbers game with KTM. It instead wanted to establish itself as a premium player in the market and things seem to have gone to plan. Moreover with dealerships in only 9 cities across the country, it can handle only a limited number of bikes. However, since its inception in December 2016, G 310 exports have done pretty well. In fact, BMW recently rolled out its 50,000th G 310 motorcycle last month.

If BMW Motorrad wants to record higher sales, the brand has to increase its touch points, and also improve after sales services. These two initiatives will go a long way in pushing the sales even further.
