BJP Wins Tripura Civic Polls With Sweeping Majority, PM Modi Thanks Voters For 'Unequivocal Support'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the people of Tripura have sent out a clear message of preferring politics of 'good governance'.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Agartala Municipal Corporation polls with a sweeping majority, with the ruling BJP winning 217 out of 222 seats. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has won three seats while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and TIPRA Motha won one seat each.

According to the state election commission officials, the BJP secured all  the wards in the 15-member Khowai Municipal Council, 17-seat Belonia Municipal Council, 15-member Kumarghat Municipal Council and nine-member Sabroom Nagar Panchayat.

The party secured all the 25 wards under Dharmanagar Municipal Council, 15-seat Teliamura Municipal Council and 13-member Amarpur Nagar Panchayat. All the 13 seats of the Sonamura Nagar Panchayat and Melaghar Nagar Panchayat were won by the party. The 11-member Jirania Nagar Panchayat was also secured by the saffron party.

The party won 12 seats of Ambassa Municipal Council, while the TMC and the CPI-M won one seat each and another seat was won by an independent candidate.

16 seats of the Kailashahar Municipal Council was won by BJP while the TMC secured one seat. The BJP won 12 seats in the Panisagar Nagar Panchayat while the CPI(M) won one seat there.

Thanking people for their 'unequivocal support', Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the people of Tripura have sent out a clear message of preferring politics of 'good governance'.

Congratulating Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb, BJP National President JP Nadda said, “I congratulate Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb, State BJP president, and all party workers for this historic win. This is a win of democracy.”

As the CPI(M) emerged as the main opposition party of the BJP in several wards of Tripura’s Municipal body, TMC said that it was an “exceptional” win for them where it had negligible presence. TMC national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee took to Twitter and wrote, “It is exceptional for a party beginning with negligible presence to successfully contest municipal elections and emerge as the 'principal opposition' in the state with more than 20% vote share.”

In continuation to the tweet, Banerjee further wrote, “This is despite the fact that we commenced our activities barely 3 months ago and @BJP4Tripura left no stone unturned to butcher democracy in Tripura. Congratulations to all the brave soldiers of @AITC4Tripura for their exemplary courage.”

The election to the 222 seats of Agartala Municipal Corporation was held on November 25.
