Bengal Firecracker Factory Blast: Calcutta HC Allows CID To Continue Probe

The Calcutta High Court has allowed the West Bengal CID to continue its investigation into the Egra blast case which killed nine people.

The Calcutta High Court has allowed the West Bengal CID to continue its investigation into the Egra blast case. The CID will investigate and decide whether a case can be initiated on the Explosives Act. The next hearing is on June 12. The PIL was filed by LoP Suvendu Adhikari, seeking NIA (National Investigation Agency) probe.

The West Bengal CID on Thursday arrested the prime accused and two others from Odisha in connection with the probe in the Purba Medinipur district where nine people were killed in the explosion. Bhanu Bagh, the main accused in the case, owns the illegal firecracker unit, a senior officer said.

The owner of the factory was arrested from a nursing home in Odisha where he has been undergoing treatment after he was injured in Tuesday's blast, the CID officer said. Bagh sustained 70 per cent burn injuries, and was in a "critical condition", he said.

“The prime accused, his son and nephew in the firecracker unit blast case were arrested from Cuttack,” the officer said.

The health condition of the main accused in the case is still "critical", and it is “now impossible to bring him back to West Bengal”, the officer said.

The district police have lodged an FIR in connection with the explosion that took place on Tuesday in which nine people were killed and several others injured.

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari also reached Khadikul village on Wednesday morning. He spoke to the locals and tried to take a look at the house where the factory was housed, from the terrace of a neighbouring building. Adhikari, who hails from Purba Medinipur district, repeated his demand for an NIA probe into the explosion and moved the court.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had on Tuesday said though the CID has been entrusted with the task of probing the explosion, she has no objection if the NIA starts investigating the matter.
