Audi Q3 Petrol vs Diesel – Real-World Performance & Mileage Comparison
Audi claims that the petrol Q3 returns better fuel efficiency than the diesel. We have put both to the test in real-world conditions to find out that and much more.
The Q3 is Audi’s most affordable and most successful crossover in India. The compact SUV is offered with both petrol and diesel engines. However, only the latter comes with an AWD (all-wheel drive) option. We have tested both versions of Audi's Q3 in real-world conditions to find out which one comes out on top. And here's what we found.
Engine
When it comes to performance, the smaller 1.4-litre petrol engine of the Audi Q3 30 TFSI is no match to the bigger 2.0-litre diesel mill of the Q3 35TDI. The diesel Q3 generates 23PS of more power and 130Nm more torque than the petrol Q3. In the 0-100kmph run too, the diesel turned out to be quicker in our tests, by 2.65 seconds to be precise.
When it comes to braking distance, the petrol Q3 has the last laugh as it comes to stop in 44.08m – 3.09m less than its diesel version. The Audi Q3 gets anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist as standard along with ventilated disc brakes at the front and solid discs at the rear. Since the braking equipment is the same, the higher kerb weight (65kgs more) of the diesel Q3 plays spoilsport here.
Fuel efficiency
Audi claims the mileage of its petrol variants to be better than the diesel ones. However, our tests prove otherwise. The tested city mileage of the petrol stands at 10.24kmpl – 2.6kmpl less than the diesel. The diesel Q3 continues to come out on top in the highway tests as well, where it returns 18.5kmpl (~4kpml more than the petrol), which is also 3.33kmpl more than its claimed mileage!
Price
The Audi Q3 30 TFSI retails for Rs 34.73 lakh, whereas the Q3 35 TDI is priced at Rs 42.88 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom Delhi).
