Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan made significant contributions to the field of education. To honour him, his birthday, September 5, is celebrated as Teachers' Day. He was a teacher, scholar, and renowned philosopher, and was also awarded the highest civilian honour of India, i.e., the 'Bharat Ratna'.

How Did the Celebration Begin?

It is said that Dr. Radhakrishnan was beloved by his students, who wanted to celebrate his birthday with great enthusiasm. However, he did not agree to a grand celebration of his birthday and instead suggested that the day be celebrated as Teachers' Day. Since then, September 5 has been celebrated as Teachers' Day, coinciding with Dr. Radhakrishnan's birth anniversary. He served as the President of India from 1962 to 1967.
