ABP Live sought the opinion of experts who explained the ingredients that can be harmful for skin and the things to be kept in mind before using cosmetics.
New Delhi: In the ever-changing world of cosmetics, where artistry and science collide, a keen eye for component selection becomes the foundation of true mastery. Cosmetics are frequently a complex blend of scents, emulsifiers, sunscreens, pigments, metals, resins, preservatives, and inert ingredients. They also typically contain a variety of exotic plant components.
At times, cosmetics can either directly irritate the skin or trigger an immune-mediated allergic response. Typically, irritation occurs the first time a person applies a cosmetic, while some people have exceptionally sensitive skin that appears to be intolerant to several cosmetics. To know more about the allergic reactions that can occur due to makeup, ABP Live sought the opinion of experts who explained the ingredients that can be harmful for skin and the things to be kept in mind before using cosmetics.
Ingredients In Makeup Products That Can Be Harmful For Skin
Before purchasing makeup, it is crucial to carefully consider the ingredients contained in the products. Some ingredients have the potential to harm your skin or trigger undesirable allergic reactions.
In this regard, Mr. Keshav Chadha, Director of Milap Cosmetics listed out some ingredients that can cause a probable allergic reaction on skin.
- Formaldehyde which is often used as a preservative, can cause skin irritation, sensitization, and even disrupt our skin's delicate balance.
- Talc, cherished for its silky texture, can clog pores, leading to potential breakouts and skin congestion.
- Coal tar, a remnant of the past, can provoke allergic reactions and may pose long-term risks due to its potentially carcinogenic properties.
In addition to that it is advisable to be cautious of substances such as phthalates, sulfates, and parabens, said Sonal Hankare who is the Head of Marketing & Communications, at Proarte.
"Sulfates can dehydrate the skin and cause itchiness, while parabens are preservatives that can disrupt hormonal balance. Fragrances often contain phthalates, which can be harmful as well. To safeguard your skin, it is advisable to choose products that are labeled as 'paraben-free', 'sulfate-free' and 'phthalate-free," she further added.
Allergic Rections That Can Occur Due To Makeup:
Cosmetic products (soaps, lotions, face, and eye makeup, and fragrances) can cause allergic reactions in some people. Dr. Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics told that 'Contact dermatitis' is an itchy rash that happens after direct contact with any substance or an allergic reaction due to makeup. The rash isn't contagious, but it is uncomfortable and can steal one’s peace of mind.
"Using makeup mindlessly can cause skin irritation, inflammation, acne, and pimples. One can also notice red bumps and rashes on the skin. Apart from that, many people can also experience flaking or peeling skin, facial swelling, irritation of the eyes, nose, and mouth, and wheezing. It is the need of the hour to consult the doctor without any delay when one notices these red flags.", she further went on to say.
Precautions That Need To Be taken Before Using Makeup:
It is important to take certain precautions while using makeup to avoid mild to severe allergic reactions on skin. Dr. Rinky told that its better to do the patch test before using any product. If there is skin irritation or redness then we must discontinue using the product.
Other precautionary measures listed by her that one must keep in mind are:
- Remove makeup before sleeping
